About Pilates
Pilates is a unique non-impact method of exercise that dramatically improves strength, flexibility, and posture. The exercises focus on strengthening the body's "core"-the muscles of the abdomen, back, and hips-which in turn support the spine and stabilize the pelvis. Initiating movement from the core and expanding it outward to the limbs, Pilates becomes a whole-body workout in the safest and most effective way.
Exercises are done sitting, kneeling, or lying down in order to prevent joint strain. Various spring-loaded apparatus are employed to support and direct your movements during the workout, ensuring the maximum benefit from each individual exercise.
There are six basic principles in Pilates: control, centering, concentration, fluidity, precision, and breathing. When you apply these principles to each exercise, you will achieve optimal benefits from your session.
Some of the benefits of a consistent Pilates
practice include:
Increased flexibility, balance, and agility
Improved stamina and lung capacity
Expanded range of motion in all joints
Better body mechanics and coordination
Increased concentration and a stronger mind/body connection
Reduced stress-related aches and pains
Increased energy and vitality
A higher level of performance in other physical activities
Noticeable improvement in the way the body functions, looks,
and feels
Who Practices Pilates?
Regardless of your age, body type, physical condition, or athletic ability, you can practice Pilates and reap the countless benefits it offers. Because Pilates exercises are tailored to each individual's personal fitness level, the practice can range from rehabilitative to vigorously challenging. As your skills improve and your muscles strengthen, the more challenging and beneficial the practice will become.
At The Pilates Room, our clients have included those suffering from osteoporosis, people recovering from illness or surgery, pregnant women and women who are looking to get back into shape after giving birth, seasoned athletes, dancers, and those who have never before undertaken a regular exercise regimen. All have found Pilates rewarding and beneficial.
Practicing Pilates is much like studying dance or martial arts: there is always more to learn and greater levels of proficiency to achieve. This is the reason that Pilates has remained popular with professional dancers and athletes for more than eighty years.
Come try a session and see how great you feel!
