FAQs

  • Absolutely! One of the beautiful things about Pilates is that it’s adaptable. There aren’t any prerequisites to get started, and it can be modified for people of all fitness levels, ages and body types—as well as for people who are working through injuries.

  • We believe including mat and reformer Pilates in a practice can help switch up the stimulus and challenge the body in a number of ways, so we structure sessions that contain elements of both.

In terms of equipment, we offer two different types of reformers at TPR: the wooden reformers that are slightly more modern and the original metal reformers, manufactured by Gratz. Both reformer types offer benefits and different ways to challenge the body. We encourage our clients to workout on both!

  • Rather than following a one-size-fits-all sequence of exercises, a client-centered approach tailors each session to the physical, mental and emotional state of the client, which of course, changes from day to day and session to session. This requires teachers to meet clients where they are in the moment. Read more about TPR’s client-centered approach in this interview with Alison Johnson, owner of TPR NYC.

  • Nope, just be you! We welcome people at any stage of their Pilates journey from beginners to advanced practitioners, and everything in between. We will meet you where you are and go from there.

  • If it’s your first session, make sure your instructor knows—there’s no shame in being new! In fact, in our studio, trying something new commands respect. Your instructor will show you what to do and talk you through it. As they do, they’ll assess your strength and flexibility; at that point, they’ll be able to get a baseline for where you are in your practice and will develop exercises specifically tailored to you so that you can improve from week-to-week. •   All class sessions are 1 hour.

  • We encourage you to wear whatever you're comfortable wearing—including sweatpants! We love seeing t-shirts that have been sitting at the bottom of your drawer for years and have nowhere else to go. They can come to Pilates.

  • Nope! We have everything you need—including a dressing room if you need to change. If you like, you can bring a towel and/or wear grip socks.

  • We offer one-on-one (private) sessions, duet sessions (2 people) and semi-private sessions (3-4 people). All semi-private sessions will include work on the reformer, tower and mat. Duet Sessions and Private sessions are geared towards your needs and goals for the day. During private sessions, you will have access to each apparatus to ensure a comprehensive classical Pilates session.

  • Our top-level, senior instructors are seasoned professionals with thousands of hours of teaching under their belts. They have years of continuing education and specialization and bring niche expertise—like pre/post-natal Pilates, scoliosis support or athletic conditioning—to the class experience. Working with a senior teacher is especially valuable for those clients looking for in-depth coaching, managing specific conditions or reaching new levels in their practice.

Our junior instructors are fully certified and actively mentored by our senior teachers. They bring fresh energy and a deep commitment to learning to every session. They often have smaller class sizes, and they are able to offer more individualized attention, creating a warm, encouraging environment where clients can explore their practice at their own pace.

Our apprentices are not beginners. They are highly skilled instructors-in-training who have already completed a significant portion of a comprehensive Pilates teacher training program. They’ve studied anatomy, movement principles, equipment safety, cueing techniques and class design—and they’re now gaining hands-on teaching experience under the mentorship of senior instructors. Our apprentices are committed, knowledgeable and enthusiastic teachers at a pivotal point in their professional development.

  • Yes, but it’s important to consult with your doctor and get the go-ahead before you begin. And please be sure to let your instructor know before class if you are pregnant or injured. At The Pilates Room NYC, we take your health seriously. If you’ve received clearance from your doctor or physical therapist, we can tailor Pilates exercises to meet your specific needs and concerns.

  • We use the principles of Classical Pilates as the foundation for our sessions. Classical Pilates maintains a strict adherence to Joseph Pilates' original system, which dictates specific movements and sequencing and focuses on six core principles: Concentration, Control, Centering, Flow, Precision and Breath. However, we can be flexible, and we sometimes modify movements and embrace adaptations to classical movements.

  • At TPR, we’ve made the decision to press pause. That’s why when you step into our studio, you won’t hear music playing in the background. It’s a conscious choice, not an absence. In a culture that often equates quiet with emptiness, we’ve found that silence offers something incredibly rich: the opportunity to tune in.
